Q This assignment should be written in paragraph form and be detailed. There is no length requirement—just say what you need to say and be done. Type up your essay (preferably in Microsoft Word) and upload it to the dropbox. I cannot open Pages files, so if you're a Mac user, you'll need to use Google Docs or save your document to a pdf before submitting. Your Task In this essay, your purpose is to inform your reader (your English 101 teacher) about your goals, both long term and short term. Think carefully about why you’re really here. Are you in this class to get a “running start” on college? Are you here because you’re just exploring to see what your interests are? Are you here because you want another crack at a higher GPA for those intensive programs like nursing or dental hygiene? Are you here because a counselor told you that you needed this class to graduate? How do you think your time here will help you with your goals? It may help to consider the following questions as you reflect on your plans. • Why are you here in English 101? What are your short-term goals with writing? What are your long-term goals with school and/or career ambitions? • What do you hope to learn in this class? • What anxieties do you have about this class? Your Audience Address your paper to me specifically. You may address it as a letter or just use the traditional essay format. Evaluation This essay will not be formally evaluated with a grade. This helps me determine your comfort with writing and your composition skills as we are beginning the semester. It should be written in a formal tone and in paragraph format. Try to provide me with different details as you relay your feelings about writing. For example—“I am here because I need this class to graduate and I have no fears about this class.” is not as helpful for me as “I’m here because I need this class to graduate. I took this class last fall and it didn’t go well for me because I was too busy with work and school. I plan to transfer to WSU and get my degree in business and I can’t make that happen until I pass this class. I’m not very anxious because I’ve taken the class before and know what to expect.”
